Trust Issues and Engaged Buddhism: The Triggers for Skillful Managerial Approaches

    Get PDF
As a transitional economy, Vietnam has undergone tremendous changes over recent decades within a ‘fusion’ context that blends both traditional and modern values from its complex history. However, few studies have explored how contemporary issues in the context of Vietnam have brought both obstacles and skillful initiatives to managerial approaches to doing business. We draw on the concepts of social trust and institutional theory to explore how informal institutions such as religious forces can contribute to the development of individual trust and whether individuals are willing to extend trust beyond familial networks. We contribute to the notion of a moral conception of trust by exploring how Buddhism in particular has initiated distinctive managerial approaches in the context of Vietnam, in response to dilemmas of social trust. Our findings highlight that as an informal institution, engaged Buddhism yields significant impact on the formation of social trust. We carried out in-depth interviews in Vietnam with 33 organizational leaders who were Buddhist practitioners, using thematic analysis to elucidate our findings and arguments. The study reveals how the incorporation of Buddhist principles has fostered context-sensitive, non-extreme, and reflexive managerial approaches to enhance morality as a response to social trust issues

EFFECT OF FISH SCALE COLLAGEN ON SOME CHARACTERISTICS AND DRUG RELEASE OF CARRAGEENAN/COLLAGEN/ALLOPURINOL FILM

ABSTRACT - QMFS2019Collagen from fish is attracting a lot of attention thanks to its high absorbance ability, biocompatibility as well as non-religious obstruction and cheap sources. It could be applied in many fields, for example: food, cosmetic, or biomedicine. Using of collagen also helps to reduce the environment pollution from fish scale waste in fish processing. In this study, collagen extracted from Vietnamese fresh-water tilapia fish scales was used in combination with carrageenan for the improvement of drug release control. The influence of fish scale collagen content on morphology, thermal behavior and drug release from carrageenan/collagen/allopurinol composite film was evaluated by methods such as field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), differential scanning calorimetric (DSC) and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis). From the DSC data, FESEM analysis and drug release of carrageenan/collagen/allopurinol composite films, the most suitable collagen in composite film is 5 wt.%

Motivations and barriers of Vietnamese students towards distance education

This paper aims to investigate the motivations and barriers of Vietnamese students towards the distance education. Quantitative strategy was exploited to conduct this research. The sample of 250 students who following the distance education programs in Ho Chi Minh City was selected. The results show that four motivation factors and six barrier factors were found. The motivations include: perceived benefits, amotivation, no pressure, and follow regulations. The barriers are: lack of time and family supports for study; lack of academic skills; lack of communications with the college/ school; Lack of Financial resources; technological problems and low Social interaction. In addition, research also proved that Perceived benefits and no pressure have positive impact on Intention of distance learning while lacking of academic skills has negative influence on the intention of distance learning

Current status and behavior modeling on household solid-waste separation: a case study in Da Nang city, Vietnam

    Get PDF
This study focused on household solid-waste recycling in Da Nang city, Vietnam to assess the existing separation behavior and clarify the factors influencing the separation behavior. The authors conducted a questionnaire survey for 150 households in 6 urban districts, which consisted of household attributes, separation behavior, and the household's attitude on recycling and the environment. The waste separation rates were determined for leftover food and 13 recyclable items and the recyclable disposal habit was also assessed. The separation rate of leftover food was 77.3%. Among 13 surveyed recyclable items, plastic bottles and metal cans were two popular items with higher separation rate (72.5% and 63.8%, respectively). To identify the conscious structure and determinants of separation behavior, the authors developed a predictive model on the separation behavior of leftover food and recyclables by logistic and multiple linear regression analyses. The positive factors included behavior intention, sympathy for the collector, incentive brought by recycling, goal intention, internal norm, and perception of responsibility and seriousness. The negative factor was evaluation of trouble. The authors also analyzed the differences in separation rates among attributes. Based on the significant influence factors and attributes, the authors suggested how to promote separation behavior

The lasting effects of innovation on firm profitability: panel evidence from a transitional economy

    Get PDF
This study is the first to study the lasting effects of innovation on firm profitability in Vietnam. Using a unique panel dataset for the period 2005–2015, our results show that innovators achieve higher profit in comparison with non-innovating firms. The positive effects of innovation on firm profitability are observed not only in the short term but also in the longer term. The benefits of innovation for firm profitability can be seen in higher export probability, better productivity, better access to formal credit, and the ability to secure government support, but only after innovation

EXTRACURRICULAR SPORTS: POPULAR CONTENTS AND FORMS AMONG STUDENTS IN THE DORMITORY OF VIETNAM NATIONAL UNIVERSITY HO CHI MINH CITY

    Get PDF
This article is written to provide thorough information about popular contents and forms of extracurricular sports performed by university students at a dormitory of Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City (VNUHCMC). The study uses document references, surveys, and statistical mathematics to investigate what extracurricular sports are favored by the students and how they organize their practices. The results indicate that the majority of students choose to practice football, volleyball, badminton, athletics, and martial arts. They play with themselves and/or in teams, without instructors, from 30 minutes to 02 hours in the afternoon after school time and/or in the morning, at the dormitory and/or sports centers.  Article visualizations

Research on microstructure and mechanical properties of Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloy when modified by La, Ce and thermo-mechanical treatment

Influence of rare-earth (La, Ce) and thermo-mechanical treatment on microstructure and mechanical properties of Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloy are presented in this article. After casting, the alloy which was modified by La, Ce, the grain size of samples obtained around 40–50 µm compared to that of without about 65 µm; and after homogeneous, the grain sizes is about 30 µm. After the cold deformation process, the distance between plates is 10 µm. By EDS after casting, the samples have tended to more La, Ce elements at the grain boundary, after homogeneous, the uniformation distribution of rare-earths was presented by mapping of EDS’s results. In addition, after rolling and heat treatment, the elements were found on the grain boundary and matrix. After recrystallization annealing, the grain size is around 10 µm with the modification sample. The grain size was reduced by two processes of modification as well as thermal-mechanical treatment is a condition for increasing the ductility of the studied alloy. Further, as a result of ability deformation from the tensile test, these results demonstrate that the tensile test obtained 140 % when adding La, Ce contents into the alloy combine with thermal-mechanical treatment. The combined used of La, Ce and thermal-mechanical treatment have increased the ductility of Al-Zn-Mg-Cu allo
